A Kirkwood man is facing felony charges following a brief standoff with Broome County Sheriff’s deputies in the Town of Kirkwood.
On Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at around 7:30 PM, members of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded to report of a man driving in circles on the lawn of a residence on Bevier St. in the Town of Kirkwood, before allegedly firing a weapon, striking an electrical transformer on the property. While fleeing the scene, the suspect struck another vehicle that had pulled into the driveway.
On Thursday, December 4th, around 8:30 AM, Broome County Sheriff’s investigators received information that the suspect, Adam K. Smith, age 46 of the Town of Kirkwood, NY, was outside his residence at 32 Krager Rd. in the Town of Kirkwood, armed with a weapon.
Members of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded to Krager Rd, where Smith had retreated into the residence, refusing to come out. Criminal charges were pending from his involvement in the December 3rd incident.
Area residents were notified to stay in their homes while the Sheriff’s utilized drones, cell phones and a Long-Range Acoustic Device to communicate with Smith and convince him to surrender. After a brief standoff with law enforcement, Smith exited the residence and was taken into custody without incident. A search warrant was executed on his residence, which resulted in the recovery of 2-unregistered handguns, approximately 40-long guns and various types of narcotics.
Following the investigation, Adam K. Smith was charged with:
– Two (2) Counts of Criminal Possession of a Firearm, a Class E Felony
– Criminal Mischief 2nd Degree, a Class D Felony
– Reckless Endangerment in the 2nd Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor
– Five (5) Counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 7th Degree, Class A Misdemeanors
– Illegal Discharge of a Firearm, a Misdemeanor
Smith was processed on the charges and turned over the Broome County Correctional Facility to await Central Arraignment.
“This individual was believed to be armed and dangerous, and I applaud our BCSO team for exercising the appropriate amount of caution to protect themselves and the community as they took him into custody,” said Sheriff Fred Akshar.
The Broome County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the New York State Police in this investigation.
