The Elmira City Council passed the city’s 2026 budget on Tuesday night.
The budgets includes a 6 percent property tax increase, which was half of the 12 percent increase that was initially proposed.
The city council approved the budget following a final public hearing on Tuesday.
The $46.7 million dollar budget is around a $5 million dollar increase from last year’s spending plan.
In order to go from the proposed 12 percent increase to 6 percent, the city made a deal with Chemung County.
The county will pay the city an advance on its uncollected foreclosure taxes from last year which will give the city about $2 million in cash towards the budget.
