The Elmira City Council approved a property tax increase on Thursday night.

The city initially proposed a 12 percent increase, but that was cut down to 6 percent after an agreement was made with Chemung County.

The county will pay the city an advance on its uncollected foreclosure taxes from last year which will give the city about $2 million in cash towards the budget.

The city previously passed a $46.7 million dollar budget, which was around a $5 million dollar increase from last year’s spending plan.

The next Elmira City Council meeting is set for Monday, Feb. 23.
