NY Attorney General’s Office investigating death of Binghamton man in police custody

The New York State Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigations has opened an investigation into the death of a Binghamton man who suffered a medical emergency while in custody of Binghamton Police.

According to the Binghamton Police Department, officers made contact with a 37-year-old man in the area of West State Street and Chenango Street on Saturday.

Police said the man was in the road and intentionally blocking an occupied Broome County Transit bus.The man allegedly climbed onto the front of the bus and showed erratic behavior towards riders and officers.

Police said they were able to de-escalate the situation and took the man into custody.

The man was hospitalized overnight and released into Binghamton Police custody on Sunday.

In the parking lot of police headquarters, the man started to have an emergency medical episode. He was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
