A longtime veteran of the Athens Township Police Department has been promoted to police chief.

In a 4-1 vote, the Athens Township Supervisors have promoted Sgt. Dan Thomas to the position of police chief.

Thomas will replace longtime chief Roger Clink, who announced his retirement in January.

Clink will serve as police chief through the end of this month.

According to the Morning Times, supervisor Paul Kelley cast the lone no vote, citing his preference for an unidentified candidate.

The promotion is contingent on a complete memorandum of understanding and salary negotiations. The deal is expected to be finalized at a meeting on March 25.
