ELMIRA, N.Y. — A Southport volunteer firefighter says he was dismissed after helping residents escape a house fire in Elmira.

The incident happened Monday, March 16, at a home on Lake Street. Brian Wells-Holmberg says he was driving nearby when he noticed heavy smoke and stopped to help.

He says several people were outside the home attempting to re-enter to retrieve belongings and pets. Wells-Holmberg assisted in getting people out of the house before emergency crews arrived.

Wells-Holmberg says he had been instructed to remain in his vehicle and keep his emergency light off until firefighters reached the scene, but chose to act due to the situation.

Following the incident, he says he was let go from his position with the Southport Fire Department.

Department leadership has not provided details on the personnel matter.

Wells-Holmberg says he stands by his decision and hopes the community understands why he chose to step in.
