TWIN TIERS, N.Y. — Chemung Canal Trust Company is warning customers about a scam involving fraudulent text messages reported Thursday.
The bank says the messages appear to come from Chemung Canal Trust Company or its divisions and may reference suspicious card activity. Officials say the texts are not legitimate and are part of an attempt to gather personal information.
Customers are advised that official messages from the bank will include “FreeMSG” at the beginning, offer an opt-out option, and will never ask for personal information by text.
Anyone who receives a suspicious message or call claiming to be from the bank is encouraged to report it by calling 800-836-3711.
Customers are also urged to take additional precautions, including enabling multi-factor authentication to help protect their accounts.
