The homeless man who was attacked by a group of teenagers last week in Binghamton will be removed from life support, making the case a murder investigation.
According to police, 45-year-old Peter Bennedum was found seriously injured last Monday night. An investigation revealed that a group of teenage boys targeted the man at around 9:30 pm near Carroll and Henry Streets.
The victim was punched and kicked in the head and body.
Two 15-year-old males and two 14-year-old males were charged with attempted murder in the second degree. A 13-year-old suspect was released to his guardian with charges expected in the future.
It appears the assault was related to a social media trend of recording attacks on homeless individuals or people addicted to drugs. The victim did not have a permanent address at the time of the assault.
A candlelight vigil will be held at 3 p.m. today (Tuesday, May 5) at Carroll and Henry Streets in downtown Binghamton.
