Athens School Board approves preliminary budget with 5.1 percent tax increase

The Athens School Board approved a preliminary budget with a 5.1 percent tax increase during its meeting on Tuesday.

A home assessed at $98,950 would see an increase of about $289 for next year.

The $48.6 million dollar budget will be up for review for one month before the school board votes on the spending plan on June 16.

Residents can view the budget at the school district office building on Canal Street or on the district’s website.

The 2026-27 budget contains a $1.5 million dollar deficit, but the school district was able to reduce the deficit by $1.2 million dollars from this past year.
