The Pennsylvania House of Representatives passed a bill on Monday to ban student cell phone use during the school day.

The bill applies to both public and private schools and allows exceptions for students with individualized learning plans, medica needs, language barriers or family members with documented medical conditions.

Schools principals would be allowed to create exemptions for reasons not specifically addressed in the bill.

A similar bill has already passed the Pennsylvania State Senate with near unanimous support back in February.

Roughly 420 of Pennsylvania’s 500 school districts have already adopted some form of a cell phone policy.

Local state reps. Tina Pickett and Clint Owlett voted in favor of the bill.
