Changes are coming to waste collection services in the Village of Elmira Heights.
According to a press release, the City of Elmira’s garbage collection for the village will end on Oct. 1.
The city had an agreement with Elmira Heights for several years, but that contract expired at the end of May.
A month-to-month agreement has been in place, but both sides mutually agreed to not move forward with the contract.
The decision to end the agreement boils down to rising labor costs for the City of Elmira, which would then turn into Elmira Heights residents paying more for the service.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, the City of Elmira’s garbage collection for the Village of Elmira Heights will end on October 1, 2026.
The last service date for the West Side will be Tuesday, September 29th.
The last service date for the East Side will be Wednesday, September 30th.
The Village is not going to offer any other garbage disposal services at this time. It will be up to the Village residents to contract their own garbage pickup. To remain impartial to the various services in the area, we are unable to provide an extensive list of contractors.
Garbage stickers will still be available at the Village Hall and at 7-11 on the corner of 13th and Oakwood until the last dates of pickup.
There will be a garbage sticker buyback program available until October 31, 2026.
