The Chemung County Sheriff's Office has announced the arrest of a 46-year-old Elmira man accused of providing an inaccurate address after his release from jail.
John A. Matthews was charged with failure to notify the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services of a change in information within the required period, a Class E felony under state Correction Law, according to a sheriff's office release dated Thursday.
Investigators say New York State Parole contacted the sheriff's office in June after Matthews was released from the Chemung County Jail. The release says Matthews had provided a new address as required, but parole officials determined the address belonged to Catholic Charities.
The sheriff's office says a later call with Catholic Charities found that Matthews had not requested housing or other public assistance from the organization. Investigators allege the address was therefore false.
A warrant was issued, and authorities located Matthews on September 8. The sheriff's office says he was taken into custody and charged with the notification offense and a parole violation. He was remanded to the Chemung County Jail.
The sheriff's release identifies the charge and allegations. Matthews is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
