Amelia Lawrence found safe in Nichols; criminal charges expected

Eight-year-old Amelia E. Lawrence was found alive and safe in the Town of Nichols at approximately 1:40 a.m. Wednesday, October 7, the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a formal statement.

Members of the Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police located Amelia. The Sheriff’s Office said the investigation is ongoing and criminal charges are expected. The statement did not identify a suspect or specify the anticipated charges.

The Sheriff’s Office thanked the search and rescue teams, Nichols Fire Department, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers, Tioga County Emergency Services, volunteers and members of the public for helping locate her.

Amelia had been reported missing after she was last seen walking on Lower Briggs Hollow Road in Nichols around 5:30 p.m. Monday, October 5. Her disappearance prompted a search in that area and a statewide missing-child alert issued early Tuesday.

The New York State Missing Child Alert was canceled at 6:43 a.m. October 7 on behalf of the Sheriff’s Office.
