The state Assembly passed a bill that would allow police officers to stop and ticket drivers for texting while driving. Under the proposed bill, police would be able to pull over drivers for that offense alone.  Right now drivers would only get ticketed for texting behind the wheel if they were pulled over for something else. Those who get pulled over under this new bill could face $150 fines and two points on their licenses. The Senate passed the bill last month.  A Consumer Reports poll back in March revealed that 30 percent of drivers admit to texting while driving. According to the department of transportation, more than 5,000 people in the U.S. were killed in distracted driving accidents back in 2009.
