The State of Pennsylvania has modified the penalties for DUI violators who cause a fatal accident and leave the scene of a crime. Currently, a loophole exists in which homicide by vehicle due to an intoxicated driver carries a minimum prison sentence of three years, but leaving the scene of an accident involving a death carries just a one-year minimum. On Monday, a new bill was signed into law to increase that minimum sentence for drivers leaving the scene to three years as well. Known as “Kevin’s Law”, the law was named after five-year-old Kevin Miller who was killed in a hit-and-run as his family was leaving a Christmas party back in December of 2012. The new law will take effect in 60 days.
