A 63-year-old Ashland resident died after a three-vehicle crash on Route 14 at Merriam Road Tuesday afternoon, the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office said in an October 14 release. Two other drivers were injured, including a Gillett woman who remained hospitalized when the release was issued.
Deputies identified the man who died as Robert J. Shock. They were dispatched to the intersection in the Town of Ashland at 4:13 PM on October 13th.
According to the sheriff’s preliminary account, Shock was driving a 2019 Nissan Rogue south on Route 14 and slowing to turn left onto Merriam Road, where he lived. A southbound Ford Mustang driven by Stephanie L. Gallagher, 37, of Chemung struck the Rogue from behind.
The impact pushed Shock’s vehicle into the northbound lane, where it was struck by a Jeep Wrangler driven by Morgan Wright, 30, of Gillett, Pennsylvania. The Jeep overturned. Shock’s vehicle crossed the intersection and came to rest off the road.
Firefighters from Wellsburg and Pine City freed Shock from his vehicle. He was taken to Arnot Ogden Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.
Wright was removed from the Jeep and taken to Robert Packer Hospital for treatment. Gallagher went to a hospital in Troy, where she was treated for a fractured foot and released, the sheriff’s office said.
The sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Division, accident reconstruction team and drone team assisted with the investigation. Responders also included Southcreek and Southport fire departments, Erway Ambulance, New York State Police, and transportation departments from New York and Pennsylvania.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation was continuing and charges were pending. Its release did not identify filed charges or announce a final determination of responsibility.
