The man who lost the Republican primary for Chemung County Sheriff has been dealt another blow. Art Laurey says his case challenging the invalidation of petition signatures was dismissed on a technicality Friday. Laurey submitted 1,700 signatures to have his name appear on the ballot under the Liberty and Justice Party. More than 600 of those signatures were ruled invalid, putting Laurey short of the required number. He filed a lawsuit, but a judge ruled the paperwork was not served in time. Laurey says he submitted the paperwork to a deputy sheriff on the last possible day, but that those papers weren’t delivered to the undersheriff until several days later. Despite the setback, Laurey says he will still run as a write-in candidate.
