Police in Elmira are warning residents about a phone scam in the area. Residents have been receiving phone calls from someone claiming to be an IRS agent. The agent claims the resident owes money. The caller typically has a heavy foreign accent and tries to convince the resident to purchase a pre-paid debit card to pay off the debt. According to police, the IRS does not make these phone calls. If you receive a similar call, officers suggest requesting information in writing that verifies the caller’s authenticity. You should also never give out any personal information.
