Elmira to Re-Erect Civil War Prison Camp

SHARE NOW

Elmira will soon be re-erecting a piece of its history. A Civil War Prison Camp once sat on the streets of Elmira 150 years ago. The prison camp was in operation from 1864-1865, and housed captured confederate soldiers. Through community donations, one of the buildings of the former camp will be built again, using the original wood and square nails in its reconstruction. The building was dismantled 27 years ago and has been sitting in storage since. The organization, Friends of the Elmira Civil War Prison Camp is collecting donations. Anyone who donates $250 or more will receive a paperweight with one of the original square nails. To donate, you can visit ElmiraPrisonCamp.com.
