A fire in the basement of an Elmira home led to an explosion Wednesday afternoon. At a home on Glen Avenue, fire investigators say a fire started when a battery pack in the basement of the house malfunctioned. The flames spread to gun powder that was also stored in the basement of the home, setting off an explosion. Two people were reportedly home at the time, but neither was seriously injured. Officials say the fire was able to be contained to the basement of the house, but there is smoke damage throughout.
