Fire crews from Elmira and Elmira Heights responded to a house fire late Monday morning in the city of Elmira.
Emergency crews were called around 10:45 a.m. to a structure fire at a home on Lake Street. When firefighters arrived, the back of the house was heavily involved in flames.
Crews were able to quickly knock down the fire, but officials say the first-floor kitchen of the apartment house suffered smoke and water damage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Firefighters also rescued a dog that was found upstairs inside the home. Crews entered through the back of the house and were able to safely bring the animal out.
Both the Elmira Fire Department and Elmira Heights Fire Department responded and worked together to bring the fire under control.
