New York’s health commissioner says flu season arrived early this year and is urging residents to take precautions before holiday gatherings and travel.

Commissioner James McDonald said New Yorkers should stay current on recommended vaccinations, including seasonal flu, COVID and RSV vaccines. He described the flu vaccine and good hand hygiene as important protection against serious illness and complications from flu.

The commissioner advised people to be vaccinated at least two weeks before large gatherings or travel when possible. He also urged anyone who is sick to stay home to help reduce the spread of illness.

State health officials say vaccination can also help protect very young children who are not old enough to receive certain vaccines and people at higher risk for serious illness. Residents with questions about which vaccines are appropriate for them should contact a health-care provider.
