Authorities have identified the individual who died in a motor vehicle crash on Route 17 near Exit 61 on Tuesday. 90-year-old John McCarthy of Elmira is said to have been driving westward in the eastbound lanes of Route 17 when he hit another car head-on. Authorities believe that McCarthy began travelling the wrong direction after leaving the rest stop in Nichols on Route 17. The driver of the other vehicle was transported to Robert Packer Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
