A woman is dead following a two-car crash on Interstate 86 in Steuben County. The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office says 79-year-old Raymond Thompson of Illinois was traveling along the highway in Fremont while towing a U-Haul trailer. Investigators say Thompson tried to change lanes after passing a vehicle, and ended up hitting another car. The trailer jackknifed and his vehicle overturned on the shoulder of the road. Thompson’s passenger, 69-year-old Sharon Thompson, was trapped beneath the vehicle, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Raymond Thompson had to be removed from the vehicle and was transported to the hospital. Deputies say the crash was caused by the slippery roads as well as operator error.
