Senator Charles Schumer is pushing for legislation that would ban suspected terrorists from buying a gun in the United States. Schumer said the current National Instant Criminal Background Check System does not check to see if a person is on a terror watch list. The system does look into a person’s mental health and criminal history.
In the last decade, Schumer said more than 1,300 suspected terrorists were cleared to purchase weapons in the United States.
Schumer said this is especially critical in light of the Boston bombings. He said the legislation will be tacked on to the Senate’s upcoming background checks bill as an amendment.
