An attorney representing inmates at the Broome County Jail has called for the removal of Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar.
Over 300 inmates became infected with Salmonella during an outbreak at the correctional facility.
The first positive test for Salmonella came back on Wednesday, May 27.
Chicken salad served at the jail tested positive for Salmonella.
Binghamton attorney Ronald Benjamin is asking Gov. Kathy Hochul to remove Akshar for what he calls dereliction of duty over the Salmonella outbreak.
Here is a complete statement from Akshar:
“Just as Ron Benjamin continues his exceedingly long history of frivolous lawsuits based on lies, demonstrably false claims and outright fabrications, the Broome County Sheriff’s Office is committed to transparency and truth. Mr. Benjamin is free to spend his time on publicity stunts and distractions, but our Broome County Sheriff’s Office remains focused on working with our community partners to manage this crisis on behalf of the people of Broome County.
We will continue prioritizing the health and safety of all those living and working within the Broome County Correctional Facility and prioritizing the safety and security of families across Broome County, because that’s what the people of our community expect and deserve.”
