Unemployment rates in Broome and Tioga counties held steady in August as the number of residents working increased from one year earlier, according to new figures from the New York State Department of Labor.
Broome County’s unemployment rate was 4.5 percent, unchanged from July and from August 2025. The state data show about 82,500 Broome County residents were employed, an increase of 1,100 from one year earlier.
Tioga County’s unemployment rate was 3.7 percent. Across the Binghamton metropolitan area, which includes Broome and Tioga counties, the rate was 4.4 percent. The two counties together had about 1,500 more residents working than they did in August 2025.
Payroll employment in the Binghamton metro area was unchanged at 99,300. The household employment figures and payroll count measure different parts of the labor market: the county rates are based on where people live, while payroll estimates track jobs reported by employers in the metro area.
Across the larger Southern Tier region, private-sector employment totaled 207,700 in August, down 2,000 jobs from one year earlier. The state reported year-over-year gains in private education and health services, while several other sectors posted declines. The monthly figures are preliminary and may be revised as additional information becomes available.
