Broome County Sheriff’s Office provides update on Salmonella outbreak at county jail

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office provided an update on the Salmonella outbreak at the Broome County Jail.

As of Friday, there were 320 total cases reported of Salmonella infection at the correctional facility. There are 450 inmates in the jail.

The health department was alerted that several inmates were experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms on Tuesday, May 26.

The first positive test for Salmonella came back on Wednesday, May 27.

Chicken salad served at the jail tested positive for Salmonella. Other foods are also being tested.

Four inmates were hospitalized for further treatment. They are in stable condition. No staff members have reported any signs of illness.

A Class Action lawsuit has been filed against Broome County and Sheriff Fred Akshar following the outbreak.
