After the Southern Tier was granted millions of dollars at the Regional Economic Development awards on Wednesday, it’s been announced that some of that money will go toward the early stages of an expansion project at the Greater Binghamton Regional Airport. Broome County Executive Debbie Preston has announced that over $1 million of the money will go toward the airport sewer expansion project. The purpose behind the project is to work on the area’s infrastructure in hopes that the county can eventually develop almost 1,000 acres of land around the airport to create a mini-corporate park. The current sewer system is over forty years old, and the project is still in its planning stages, with work expected to begin next year and be finished by the end of 2015.
