An 81-year-old man has been charged after Broome County deputies said he hit a crossing guard on River Road last week and then left the scene. Deputies arrested Syed Ahmed Tuesday at his Chenango Bridge home. Carole Smith, the 75-year-old crossing guard who was hit, was able to provide investigators with a thorough description of the vehicle and part of its license plate. According to deputies, Ahmed admitted to being at the scene, but didn’t realize he had struck the crossing guard. He was issued a traffic ticket for failure to yield to a pedestrian within a crosswalk and will appear in Town of Chenango Court to answer the summons. The crossing guard was not injured in the incident.
