The 2017 Lyme Disease season is in full swing in the Southern Tier, and the health departments of both Broome and Tioga County are reaching out to the community to make them aware of the danger that deer ticks can bring with them. Ticks cling to tall grass, brush, and shrubs and can transmit Lyme Disease by biting you or your pet. Anyone who goes outside is urged to wear enclosed shoes, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt to protect against tick bites. The Tioga County Health Department says they have already seen double the amount of confirmed Lyme Disease cases through the first three months of this year. In response, they are handing out FREE Tick Removal Kits at the Health and Human Services Building on Route 38 in Owego.
