The City of Binghamton and the Village of Johnson City have snagged a second place statewide award commending the shared police services of the two municipalities.
The New York Conference of Mayors handed out the prize for their Public Administration and Management category.
Binghamton and Johnson City have been sharing a police chief and assistant chiefs since last year, a savings of nearly $100,000 for Binghamton and $84,000 for Johnson City.
Leaders say it’s a setup that could become a model for other New York cities looking to cut costs while remaining effective.
“We’re not lowering the amount of officers on the street at all and I think the actual merging of the other departments gives us more insight into urban policing,” Binghamton Mayor Matt Ryan said.
This is the third award Binghamton has won in the category since 2008.
