The City of Binghamton will soon be making money for every time it recycles. Mayor Matthew Ryan held a press conference Wednesday night at City Hall to announce the city’s new partnership with Broome Recycling. Ryan shopped Binghamton’s recycling contract to multiple companies, eventually awarding it to the highest bidder. Under this new plan, Binghamton will receive $31.50 for every ton of recyclables it deposits, which Ryan says will total about $126,000 per year. The city then plans to use the money for recycling education in schools and municipalities. The partnership with Binghamton and Broome Recycling should be positive for both sides, as the city no longer has to transport its recycling as far, and Broome Recycling plans to add a half-dozen new jobs. Binghamton currently has a 42.6 percent rate of people recycling, and its goal is to reach a 50 percent recycling rate by 2015.
