The city of Binghamton is unloading dozens of vacant lots, some of which have been on the books for more than 30 years. Tarik Abdelazim, the Director of Planning, Housing and Community Development, says his department found 40 city owned parcels during a full inventory analysis over the winter, including 39 vacant lots and one garage. The city hopes local residents will buy some of the lots to expand their yards. The city sent out letters to all neighbors informing them of the auction. Abdelazim says the vacant properties have been costing tax payers and the city money for decades. Some people use the lots for parking for their house or business. He says if the lot isn’t bought, prohibited parking will be enforced. The Broome County auction will be held April 13.
