Demolition of the Ellis Brothers Furniture building in Binghamton is scheduled to begin today. The fourth floor of the structure at 162 Water Street is set to have demolition begin after the entire building was deemed unsafe by engineers following a devastating fire at the end of April. The fourth floor, which is the top floor, will have to be demolished by hand, with heavy machinery used next week to tear the remainder of the building down. The demolition will be performed by Peak Environmental of Owego, and the process is being paid for by Ellis Brothers. The entire process of tearing down the building is expected to take about a week. Water Street between Court and Henry streets will remain closed to traffic for the week of demolition.
