Governor Andrew Cuomo stopped by Binghamton University on Monday to sign legislation looking to combat the growing heroin problem across New York State. The governor signed a series of bills in front of area leaders and state police at the Innovative Technologies Complex at BU. He emphasized that while heroin is an issue throughout New York, it has recently become more and more of a problem in suburban and rural areas, which he cited as one of the reasons to travel Upstate to sign the legislation. The legislation calls for adding an additional 100 state troopers to the State Police’s drug task force. It also calls for increases in criminal penalties up to high felonies for dealers of the drug. There will also be heroin awareness campaigns at SUNY and private colleges statewide.
