A man was arrested after New York State Police say he ran from troopers then fell into the Susquehanna River. Troopers said at approximately 10:32 p.m. last night, Matthew Barrows of Castle Creek Road in Binghamton, was driving off Hooper Road and onto George F Highway in the town of Union when he ran a red light. Troopers said they tried to pull him over but Barrows drove onto River Road, then jumped out of the car and was running alongside the Susquehanna River in an attempt to flee. That’s when he fell into the river. A water rescue team was brought in for help, but eventually called off. Barrows was found less than an hour later — at approximately 11:22 p.m. — hiding along the river bank, west of where he fell in. He was taken to Wilson Hospital where he was checked for hypothermia and shortly released. Troopers said he is facing a charge of fleeing from police in a motor vehicle, which is a misdemeanor. He was also ticketed for several traffic violations including driving with a suspended license. Barrows is being held in the Broome County Jail on $1,000 bail.
