Monday marked the first day of mandatory furloughs at the Federal Aviation Administration, and some local airports are affected.
Due to sequestration cuts, about 15,000 air traffic controllers must take unpaid time off of work. The sequestration comes after Congress failed to agree to a national budget before their self-imposed deadline of March 1st. The FAA says up to 30 percent of its flights may be delayed as a result.
Starting this week, air traffic controllers in Binghamton will be required to take one unpaid day off every two weeks as a result of mandatory cuts.
The airport towers at Binghamton was under consideration to be closed, but was taken off the list.
The Ithaca Airport control tower will be closed because of the cuts.
