A Binghamton Police captain has filed a lawsuit against a man who allegedly struck him with his vehicle this past fall. Captain John Chapman was crossing North Shore Drive on September 23rd when 28-year-old Terrence Meehan is said to have turned east from Washington Street and struck Chapman in the crosswalk with his pickup truck. Chapman was on his way to work when the incident took place. Now Chapman is seeking unspecified monetary compensation for his injuries, which were listed as non-life-threatening. The lawsuit asks that the court determines the compensation. Chapman spent about three months recovering from his injuries before returning to duty, and because he was not at work at the time of the crash, he was not eligible for workers compensation benefits, which would make Meehan’s insurance carrier liable for medical costs, a portion of lost wages, and other expenses, according to Chapman’s attorney. Meehan was arrested following the incident, and alcohol was not determined to be a factor. He was charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and having an unregistered vehicle, was sent to the Broome County Jail, and released after posting $10,000 bail.
