The Binghamton Police Department has started phasing in officer body cameras, and with it some questions on how to handle the footage are being raised. Currently, the footage will not be able to be accessed by the public without the public first having to go through the District Attorney’s office and attaining a court order. The reason for this is because the video footage is currently being regarded as a way to protect police officers. However, the discussion on video footage attained through the use of police body cameras and how it should be handled in regards to Federal Freedom of Information laws is still ongoing. The Binghamton Police Department is expected to continue slowly phasing in police body cameras until every officer has one.
