Broome County continues to face issues of overcrowding at the county’s jail. County Executive Debbie Preston is asking for $5.7 million in next year’s budget for renovations at the facility, which looks to help alleviate the problem of inmate population growth. The plan would add 64 beds to the jail, which currently has 536 beds. Inmate population trends predict that the county will need up to 710 jail beds by 2028.
