Broome County has been listed among two dozen municipal governments that are fiscally stressed. Tuesday, state comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said eight counties, three cities, and 13 towns made the list of the most fiscally troubled communities in New York. Broome County has been designated as “susceptible to fiscal stress” in the ratings, mostly due to the ratio of its general fund balance to its general fund expenditures. Broome ranked as the fifth-most stressed county of 57 in New York, excluding 14 that did not submit information on time. DiNapoli said that while Broome was not at the top of the list of regions of concern in the state, there are trends happening in the county that should be paid close attention to going forward.
