As prom and graduation season is in full swing, Broome County is looking to crack down on underage drinking. STOP-DWI, the Sheriff’s office, and local companies and agencies are teaming with the county to step up enforcement. The main focus is to stop underage students from buying alcohol or having an adult buy it for them. According to a study, 15 percent of Broome County teens admit to binge drinking, which is higher than the national average of 14 percent. A survey of Broome County youth also shows that 67 percent of high school seniors say they consume alcohol and 47 percent admit it’s easy to obtain. Sheriff David Harder says that his office will increase patrols throughout prom and graduation season. Supplying a minor with alcohol is a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail or a $1,000 fine.
