The Southern Tier has seen an increase in violent crimes from data collected in 2011. The Federal Bureau of Investigation released data showing the increase in violent crime. In The Binghamton Metropolitan Area, which includes both Broome and Tioga counties, violent crime rose from 548 cases in 2011 to 632 cases in 2012. The number of murders during that time rose from three to seven. The city of Binghamton itself saw its violent crime total rise from 268 to 315, accounting for nearly half of the crimes in the entire area. The most prevalent crime during that span in the area was property crime, which there were 6,851 cases of in 2012 alone.
