A woman has died after she jumped from the Route 201 bridge onto the ice of the Susquehanna River on Tuesday afternoon. Johnson City Police say that the incident is being investigated as a suicide. The identity of the middle-aged woman has not been released at this time, as authorities are still looking to notify the woman’s next of kin. She was pronounced dead at UHS Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City after firefighters retrieved her from the ice covering the river. Emergency responders from both Johnson City and Vestal responded to the scene just before 2 o’clock Tuesday after multiple 911 calls reported that a person had jumped from the bridge’s southbound side. The woman was found unconscious on the ice and a rescue boat had to be used to retrieve her. Firefighters staged the rescue from the boat launch off of Boland Drive in Johnson City, and the rescue effort took about thirty minutes.
