An early morning fire in Johnson City proved to be fatal. Around 2 o’clock Sunday morning, firefighters were called to 71 Baker Street for a reported kitchen fire, but when they arrived they found the home engulfed in flames. At least one person was reported trapped inside, and firefighters performed a search-and-rescue mission in the home. They were able to remove 26-year-old Sarah Wenzinger, and she was sent to UHS Wilson Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead. An autopsy revealed that her primary cause of death was smoke inhalation. A 38-year-old male was able to escape from the fire but suffered injuries and was taken to Upstate Medical in Syracuse. His name has not been released by officials at this time. Vestal and Binghamton Fire Departments also responded to the scene, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
