The Joint Landowners Coalition of New York is moving forward with its lawsuit against the state, and the group has begun fundraising to help finance the effort. The landowners are seeking compensation for what they believe to be New York State taking away their rights as landowners by implementing a moratorium against hydrofracking. Attorneys for the landowner’s coalition say the case will focus on two or three plaintiffs with the best claims against the state. The lawsuit could become very expensive, as it is estimated that an expert witness alone could cost the Joint Landowners Coalition more than $100,000. They look to receive money from not only their members, but affected organizations throughout the state or even other areas in the country. The coalition says the lawsuit will begin as soon as all of the necessary funds are in place.
