The unemployment rate in the Binghamton region has fallen by almost 2 percent in the past year alone. According to the state Department of Labor, the April 2014 unemployment rate for the Binghamton area was 6.1 percent, down from 7.7 percent in April of last year. The total number of unemployed workers in the area fell by almost 1,100 workers. As a whole for New York state, unemployment dropped from 7.4 percent last April to 6.1 percent this year. The country’s unemployment rate is slightly lower at 5.9 percent. According to officials for the Department of Labor, the local unemployment numbers are the lowest they have been since April of 2008.
