Progress is being made on the highway work near Prospect Mountain. Massive steel girders were lowered into place on Wednesday. The girders are the next step in constructing the new bridges which take Interstate 81 and Route 17 over the Chenango River. Work on the bridge’s concrete piers continues. The new bridge decks will be much wider and include a shoulder for disabled vehicles. The existing bridges were built in the 1960’s. Officials say the new bridges are being built to modern design standards, and should be open for traffic by the end of next year. The entire Prospect Mountain project is scheduled to be complete at the end of 2018.
