A report released by the New York State Comptroller’s office on Thursday claims Broome County is in major financial stress. The audit was requested by Broome County Executive Jason Garnar and Legislature Chairman Daniel Reynolds. The audit looked at 2016 and part of 2017. It found that Broome County had only $250,000 left in its fund balance. Garnar was not surprised by the report, stating that the county has struggled for the last 5 years, and as a result has depleted its extra funds. The airport, two entertainment venues, the nursing home, and the public transportation system are not self-sustaining according to the audit.Garner says the 2018 budget should help relieve the financial stress.
